I attented a local women’s meeting, where local business women get together, have a fabulous lunch and share about our businesses.
I met Barbara VanderMolen and she introduced us to her book Discovering Michigan County by County: Your A to Z Guide to each of the 83 counties in the Great Lake State. I was amazed. This book is over 500 pages. On Michigan. I just looked at it and thought oh my word, this is a big reference book, what did this woman do!
Then Barbara did something awesome. She explained how this book was 9 years in the making. She started out collecting data in Wayne, Grand Traverse County, and Goegebic counties (where she’s from, a tourist area and a county she knew nothing about). She consultated the 2010 census to get facts and figures. There is information about celebrations in the county, for example, as long as they are 2-3 days long. There is a lot of information on each county. (read an excerpt here)
I was so impressed with the book, as it is a family goal of ours to see all of Michigan, and this had some great information. There is a super extensive index in this book. If you were looking for something specific about Michigan, you would find it there.
So I bought the book directly from Barabra as we were leaving for a trip for Traverse City and it was a perfect time to try it out.
Barbara suggested we take the book with us and as we were driving through the state, to review the information on each county traveled.
My husband loves obscure facts, so I thought this would be perfect, I’d actually hear something I was actually interested in.
Book in hand, we were off on our 3 1/2 hour trip to Travese City. We read about our county and the counties we traveled in. We learned about what crops are grown there, the average income, what the cost of the homes are, parks historical markers, and so much more that we didn’t realize.
We also learned there are some more areas in Michigan we have been passing by, that we want to visit.
The book is $50, which seems like a lot; but it contains 1,900 color photos. The book is is over 500 pages and definitely a personal guide to Michigan, making it worth the investment. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Michigan Foundation for Agriculture.
If you love Michigan and want to know more or are looking for the perfect gift for someone who loves the mitten state, this is a great book to purchase. You can order directly on the Discovering Michigan County by County website.
